ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity: how each one answers a buyer’s question

Four assistants, four different ways of deciding who gets quoted. If you have only ever tested one of them, you have only seen a quarter of the picture.

The short answer

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity all read the web and write an answer, but they lean on different sources and reward different kinds of pages. ChatGPT search favors pages that answer a question directly and cites a broad mix of sources. Claude tends to write longer, more cautious answers and leans on fewer, more authoritative-looking sources. Gemini draws heavily on Google's own index, so pages that already rank organically have an edge. Perplexity is built around citation-first answers and rewards recent, well-sourced pages with a diverse set of citations. None of them can be optimized for in exactly the same way, so the safest approach is a page that would satisfy all four: a direct answer, verifiable facts, and enough freshness to survive a re-crawl.

A landscaper we talked to ran the same question through four assistants in the same afternoon: “best drainage contractor for a wet backyard in a cold climate.” ChatGPT named her company third and linked her guide page. Claude named two national franchises and never mentioned her at all. Gemini surfaced a local competitor who ranks well organically. Perplexity cited a homeowner forum thread where her company was recommended by name, in the comments, from eight months ago.

Four different answers, from the same question, asked minutes apart. None of them were wrong. They were built to weigh different things.

What is each assistant actually built to do?

  1. 1

    ChatGPT

Blends its own crawl with search-style results. Rewards pages that answer the question directly, near the top, in plain text.

  2. 2

    Claude

Writes longer, more cautious answers and cites fewer sources. Rewards pages that read as clearly authoritative and internally consistent.

  3. 3

    Gemini

Draws heavily on Google's own index. A page that already ranks organically has a real head start here.

  4. 4

    Perplexity

Built around citation-first answers. Rewards recent, specific pages and a diverse spread of sources over one dominant one.

The same question, asked four different ways, tends to surface four different shortlists.

A simpler way to think about it: two buckets, not four

Rather than building a separate strategy for each assistant, it helps to group them by how they tend to behave. ChatGPT and Perplexity lean toward fast, discovery-style answers built from whatever most directly and recently addresses the question. Claude and Gemini lean toward slower, more research-style answers, one favoring caution and the other favoring pages that have already earned trust elsewhere.

QuestionFast, discovery-style (ChatGPT, Perplexity)Slower, research-style (Claude, Gemini)
Best forBeing found for a specific, narrow buyer question.Being trusted once someone is already comparing options carefully.
What it rewardsDirectness and recency. A sharp, current answer beats a vague, older one.Consistency and corroboration. Facts that agree everywhere they appear.
How to optimizeAnswer the exact question in the first two lines, keep the page fresh.Keep facts identical across your site and any pages that already rank well.
Risk if ignoredA smaller, sharper competitor page wins the citation.A vague or inconsistent page gets quietly dropped from consideration.

The goal is not four separate strategies. It is one page good enough that none of the four assistants have a reason to skip it.

What this actually means for your content

Write the page for the buyer question first, and treat the assistant as a reader who will only see two or three sentences of it. That single habit performs reasonably across all four systems. Layer on top of it the things each one specifically rewards: keep the page fresh for Perplexity, keep the facts corroborated elsewhere for Claude, invest in organic fundamentals for Gemini, and keep the direct-answer structure tight for ChatGPT.

We wrote a companion piece on where Google’s AI Overviews fit into this, since they run on a related but distinct set of rules from the standalone assistants above.

Common questions about the major AI assistants

Which AI assistant do most buyers actually use?+

It depends heavily on the category and the customer's age and habits. ChatGPT has the largest general audience, Gemini shows up inside Google's own results and Android devices, Perplexity has a smaller but research-heavy audience, and Claude is used less for local buying decisions and more for drafting and analysis. Most businesses should assume they need to be readable by all four rather than betting on one.

Do I need a different strategy for each assistant?+

Not a different strategy so much as a different emphasis. A page with a direct answer, consistent facts, and clean structure performs reasonably across all four. Where they diverge is in how much they reward freshness and citation diversity, which mostly affects how often you should update a page rather than how you write it.

Why did Perplexity cite a small blog over my page?+

Perplexity tends to favor whichever page most directly and recently answers the exact question, regardless of the site's overall authority. A smaller page with a sharper, more current answer can outrank a larger site with a vaguer one.

Does Gemini just repeat Google's top result?+

Not exactly, but there is a real relationship between organic ranking and what Gemini tends to surface, since it draws on the same index. Improving your organic ranking for a question is one of the more reliable ways to influence what Gemini says about it.

Is Claude worth optimizing for if it has a smaller consumer search audience?+

Yes, for two reasons. Claude is increasingly used inside other products and workflows where a recommendation still matters, and its more cautious citation style rewards exactly the kind of clear, well-sourced page that also helps you everywhere else.
