Google's AI Overviews vs. ChatGPT and Perplexity: two different games

They look similar, an AI-written summary at the top of an answer, but the way each one decides what to show you runs on different rules entirely.

The short answer

Google's AI Overviews sit on top of a familiar search results page, drawing mostly from pages that already rank well organically, and a user can still scroll past it to the traditional list. ChatGPT and Perplexity are a different game: the chat answer often is the entire experience, with no ranked list underneath to fall back on, and their source selection depends less on your existing organic rank and more on how directly and recently your page answers the exact question asked. Winning a spot in an AI Overview is closer to traditional SEO. Winning a citation in ChatGPT or Perplexity is closer to AEO.

A furniture retailer told us they had “already done the AI thing” because their return policy page appeared inside a Google AI Overview for a common shipping question. Fair enough, that is a real win. But when we asked Perplexity the same question directly, it cited a completely different page, on a completely different site, and never mentioned the retailer at all. They had won one game and had no idea a second one was being played at the same time.

Two different experiences wearing a similar look

Both surfaces show an AI-written summary with sources underneath, and it is easy to assume they work the same way. They do not. A user seeing an AI Overview was already running a search and can ignore the summary entirely if they choose to. A user asking ChatGPT or Perplexity a question directly usually has no ranked list waiting underneath if the answer disappoints them. The stakes, and the selection rules, are different.

One of these surfaces still has a results page underneath it. The other one usually is the entire results page.

Being skipped by an AI Overview costs you a shortcut. Being skipped by a standalone assistant can cost you the entire conversation.

What this means for where you spend your effort

Keep investing in the SEO fundamentals that help you rank organically, since that work now does double duty by also improving your odds inside AI Overviews. Separately, and deliberately, check how ChatGPT and Perplexity answer your buyer questions directly, since organic rank is a weaker predictor there. Common questions about AI Overviews and chat assistants

Do AI Overviews replace ChatGPT or Perplexity for buyers?+

Not really, they serve different moments. An AI Overview appears inside a search someone was already going to run. ChatGPT and Perplexity often replace the search entirely, since the user asks the assistant directly instead of opening a search engine at all.

Does ranking well organically help with AI Overviews?+

Yes, more than it helps with a standalone assistant. AI Overviews draw heavily on Google's existing index and tend to favor pages that already rank well for the query, so classic on-page and technical SEO carries real weight here.

Why does a page rank well on Google but get ignored by ChatGPT?+

Because ChatGPT is not simply reading Google's ranked list. It is deciding, independently, which pages most directly answer the specific question asked, and a page written for broad keyword ranking rather than one clear question can be well-ranked and still poorly quoted.

Can a business optimize for both at once?+

Yes, and most should. A page that answers a specific buyer question directly, in plain language, backed by consistent facts, tends to help with organic ranking, AI Overviews, and standalone assistants at the same time. The overlap is larger than the differences.

How do I know if I am showing up in AI Overviews?+

Search the exact questions your buyers would type and watch for the AI-generated box above the normal results. There is no reliable reporting tool for this yet for most businesses, so manual spot-checking on a schedule is still the most dependable method.
