What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Your customers are asking assistants for recommendations before they ever see your website. Here is what that changes about the way you write, and how to tell whether it is working.

The short answer

Answer Engine Optimization is the work of getting your business used inside the answer an AI assistant gives, instead of only ranking on a page of blue links. It means writing pages that answer real buyer questions directly, keeping your facts consistent everywhere they appear, and checking which brands the assistants actually name.

Priya runs a bike shop with two locations. Last spring a customer walked in, asked for a gravel bike fitting, and mentioned that an AI assistant had recommended the shop by name. Priya had never heard of anyone finding her that way. She went home, opened the same assistant, and typed the question a customer would type. Two shops came back. Hers was one of them, listed second, with a link to a cycling forum thread rather than to her own website.

That is the whole problem in one story. She was in the answer, but she was not the source of it, and she had no idea how she got there or how to stay. Answer Engine Optimization is the work of taking the luck out of that.

What is AEO in plain terms?

Search used to hand you a list and let you decide. An answer engine decides first, then hands you a short recommendation with a few links underneath. AEO is the practice of preparing your business so that when that decision gets made, your information is the material the assistant reaches for.

It is less mysterious than it sounds. Assistants are looking for content that clearly answers the question that was asked, from a source that seems credible, with facts that do not contradict what they find elsewhere. Most of the work is writing and tidying, not engineering.

Two colleagues talking across a table with an open laptop between them.
The change is not really about technology. It is about the shortlist your buyer arrives with.

Why does this matter for a small business now?

Try it yourself before you take anyone’s word for it. Open the assistant your customers use, ask the question a buyer in your category would ask, and read the answer carefully. Note which businesses get named, which sites get linked, and how many of them are the actual brands rather than review sites or forums.

Do that five or six times with different phrasings and a pattern will show up. In most categories, a handful of names come back again and again. If you are not one of them, a slice of buyers has already finished their research without seeing you at all.

The visit you never got is the hardest kind of loss to notice. Nothing shows up in your analytics, because nothing happened.

How does an assistant decide who to mention?

The exact mechanics differ between products and they change often, but the shape is consistent. The assistant reads the question, retrieves a set of pages it thinks are relevant, and writes a short answer using what it found. It then cites a few of those pages.

Three things influence whether your page makes it into that set. First, can the page be fetched at all. Second, does the page answer the specific question rather than dance around it. Third, do the facts on your page agree with the facts that appear about you elsewhere. Assistants are cautious about claims they cannot corroborate.

What does good AEO actually look like?

Priya did five things over about six weeks. None of them required a developer, and the whole list is repeatable in any category.

  1. 1

Answer in the first two lines

Put the direct answer at the top of the page, before the story and the brand language. If someone reads only two sentences, they should have what they came for.

  2. 2

Write the questions people actually ask

Not keywords. Questions. Is this bike fitting worth it, how long does it take, what happens if the fit is wrong. Give each one a heading and a short answer.

  3. 3

    Keep one set of facts

Hours, pricing, service names, return policy, locations. If your site says one thing and a listing says another, assistants tend to trust neither.

  4. 4

Make the page readable by a machine

Clear headings in order, plain text rather than text baked into images, and structured data that matches what a visitor can see on the page.

  5. 5

Check that you can be fetched

A page blocked by a bot rule or hidden behind a challenge is invisible no matter how good the writing is. This is the cheapest problem to fix and the easiest to miss.

Six weeks later her shop was being cited from her own fitting page for two of the four questions she was watching. The forum thread still appeared, which is fine. Both can be true at once.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

These two terms get used as if they mean the same thing, and the confusion costs people time. The simplest way to hold them apart is by asking what you are trying to change.

QuestionAEOGEO
Full nameAnswer Engine OptimizationGenerative Engine Optimization
Main focusYour own pages answering a question directly enough to be used. How generative systems describe your brand across every source they read.
Where the work happensMostly on your website: structure, clarity, facts, and access.Across the wider web: reviews, forums, retailers, directories, press.
Typical fixRewrite a page so the answer comes first and the questions have headings.Correct an outdated review listing, or earn coverage on a site that gets cited.
What failure looks likeYour page exists but is never quoted, because it never answers plainly. You are named in answers, but every citation points at someone else’s page.

In practice they overlap and most businesses need both. Start with AEO because it is inside your control, then move to GEO once you can see which outside sources the assistants keep quoting. We wrote a companion piece on that: what GEO is and how to work on it.

How do you measure whether it is working?

One answer proves nothing. Ask the same question twice in a week and you may get two different results, because the model changed, the retrieval changed, or a competitor published something new. The unit of measurement is a pattern, not a screenshot.

Track three states separately, because they are not the same win:

  • Your brand was named. The assistant mentioned you in the answer. Good, but the reader may still click through to someone else.
  • Your site was linked. The answer cited a page you own. This is the outcome most businesses actually want.
  • A competitor was cited instead. The clearest statement of where the work is.

Add two more habits. Record the date and the exact answer, so you can look back at what was said rather than argue from memory. And be honest about surfaces you cannot measure reliably. An unmeasured surface is not a zero, and treating it as one will send you chasing problems that do not exist.

Where should you start this week?

Pick your ten most valuable buyer questions. The ones that come up in sales conversations, not the ones with the biggest search volume. Ask each one, write down who gets named and who gets cited, and keep the answers in a document with the date on it.

Then take the single page most connected to those questions and rewrite the top of it so the answer comes first. That one change tends to move more than any technical work you can do in the same afternoon.

Common questions about AEO

What does AEO stand for?+

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the practice of preparing your content so that AI assistants and answer engines can use it when they respond to a buyer question, rather than optimising only for a ranked list of links.

Is AEO different from SEO?+

It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Traditional SEO earns a position in a list of results. AEO tries to earn a place inside the answer itself, which usually means answering one question clearly and being consistent about your facts across the whole web.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?+

AEO is mostly about your own content and how directly it answers a question. GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is broader and covers how generative systems represent your brand across every source they draw on, including reviews, forums, retailers and press coverage. Most businesses need both.

How do I know if AEO is working?+

Track a fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule, and record three things separately: whether your brand was named, whether your own site was linked, and whether a competitor was cited instead. A single answer means very little. The pattern across several runs is the signal.

How long does AEO take to show results?+

Expect weeks rather than days. Assistants refresh their sources on their own timetable, answers vary between runs, and a change you publish today may not appear in an answer for several cycles. Verify that your change is live, then watch the trend.
